Torontonian’s know exactly what to expect. Adding the (unofficial) new city motto to the welcome sign ensures that visitors arrive prepared for the inevitable. A replica of the city’s welcome sign is currently on display in the window of Gallery 1065.
This new slogan was part of a playful reimagining of Toronto's official emblem and motto. While the current coat of arms features symbols like a golden eagle, beaver, and bear, the new version swaps them for the true wildlife of the city: raccoons, pigeons and rats. It also updates the motto from “Diversity Our Strength” to a phrase that feels more fitting for life in modern Toronto—“Expect Delays”—offering a more accurate commentary on the city’s daily realities.
Limited edition silkscreened t-shirts and tote bags and vinyl stickers with the new coat of arms were created for a recent art show at Gallery 1065 in Toronto’s west end. If you are interested in purchasing stickers, totes or tees, please reach out to Jode at joderoberts@gmail.com.
