The Homegrown National Park Project (2013–2016) was a pilot initiative by the David Suzuki Foundation that reimagined urban green spaces as vital corridors for nature and wildlife. Focused on Toronto’s downtown west end, the project enlisted a team of volunteer "park rangers" to plant pollinator-friendly gardens, create green corridors, and install creative interventions like canoe gardens and pop-up parks. By blending grassroots action with ecological restoration, the initiative demonstrated how cities can be transformed into thriving, biodiverse spaces. The project laid the foundation for future community-led rewilding efforts, including the Butterflyway Project.
